About Saiha

Saiha TownSaiha is an important town located in the district of Saiha in Mizoram. The official name of Saiha is Mara. Saiha is also the headquarters of the Mara Autonomous District Council. It is one of autonomous district councils within the state of Mizoram. The word Siaha in local language means an elephant tooth, where ‘Sia means Masia’ and 'ha means tooth’.

This was an area where elephant teeth were found in large amount.  The locals call it Siaha, but the Mizo people call it 'Saiha'. The town also serves as a major commercial centre for Mara people as well as the neighbouring Burmese peoples.

Saiha lies between 22.48oN latitude and 92.97oE longitude. The town is located at an altitude of 2391 feet above sea level. The town of Saiha is surrounded by the Lawngtlai District in the west, by the district of Lunglei in the north and northwest and the parts of Myanmar in the south and east.

Demographics of Saiha

As per the 2011 census the total population of the town of Saiha is 25,110, out of which 12,741 are males and 12,369 are females. The average literacy rate here is 79%. The official language here is Mizo.

History of Saiha

The town of Saiha is located in the district of Saiha. Earlier the district was part of the Chhimtuipui District. In the year 1998 after the Chhimtuipui District was divided, the other half came to be known as the Saiha District.

The town of Saiha is located in the district of Saiha. The Deputy Commissioner is the head of the district administration. The district consists of 3 R.D. Blocks which include Saiha, Sangau and Tuipang (Tipa V). The district has three assembly constituencies that are Saiha, Sangau and Tuipang.

Saiha is a place of immense scenic beauty. There are many naturally beautiful tourist places across Saiha which attracts tourists from near and far. The important tourist destinations of the district include:

Pala Tipo Lake

Pala Tipo Lake

Pala Tipo Lake is the biggest lake of Mizoram. It is also called Pala lake and Palak Dil. The lake is situated in the Mara Autonomous District Council. It is situated at a distance of 76 km from Saiha. It is situated on the western part of MADC. The lake is surrounded by lush greenery. It is 2 sq kms in area. Elephants and other wild animals could be seen around the lake.

Saikao

The place is famous for the Evangelical Church. The church was developed under the British rule. It was founded by English Missionary Rev & Mrs Reginald Arthur Lorrain in 1907. It is the largest church in Maraland. Saikao is a place of immense scenic beauty. The major attractions of the place are the wooden houses. The place is also home to a number of missionaries.

Blue Mountain MizoramMount Mawma

It is the fifth highest mountain in Mizoram and the highest mountain in Mara Autonomous District Council. Mount Mawma is located 6370 feet above from the sea level. The mountain range is situated at a distance of 15 kms from Myanmar. During winter the plains of Bangladesh and Myanmar are visible. Below the Mt Mawma lies the Chakhei town.

Blue Mountain

It is the highest mountain peak in Mizoram and a highly revered peak. It is considered to be the abode of the gods. It is also called Phawngpui peak. From the peak site one can have a view of Mizoram (Image Source).

How to Reach Saiha

Saiha can be easily reached by taxi and bus from Aizawl. The distance between Saiha and Aizawl ithrough NH 54 is 378 kms. There are regular bus and jeep service from Aizawl. There are no airports in Saiha. The nearest airport is Lengpui Airport in Aizawl. Pawan Hans also started a helicopter service from Aizawl to Saiha. There is also no railway station in Saiha. The nearest railway station is the Bairabi Rail Way Station.
